In recent years, a remarkable transformation has been underway in the tattoo industry, revolutionizing the way artists create their work.
The traditional buzzing of coil machines is being replaced by the soft hum of battery-powered pen tattoo machines, making them the most sought-after tattoo machines on the market. The rotary machine revolution started over 10 years ago, with brands like Inkjecta and Stigma, among others bringing the long-sidelined rotary into the mainstream, offering 'give' settings and more that older models never did. Then, as lithium-ion batteries improved exponentially, we saw another huge shift... the shift towards battery powered tattoo pens. In the last few years, new tech has made pens much more dynamic and adjustable to suit everyone, offering 'give', stroke length settings and much more, so... here it is, the rise of the pen machines, the new tattoo revolution.
In this blog, we'll delve into the reasons behind this shift, explore the benefits of battery-powered pen tattoo machines, and guide you on what to look for when choosing the perfect machine for your style.
The Shift Towards Battery-Powered Pen Tattoo Machines
Battery-powered pen tattoo machines have rapidly gained popularity due to their numerous advantages over traditional coil machines. These sleek and compact devices are designed to resemble a pen, offering artists improved precision, control, and versatility. Gone are the days where an apprentice artist had to try and make super-clean work while holding a 2llb lump of vibrating brass with a big ol' clip cord hanging off the back. These days, it's minimal vibration, zero effort... still, the traditional coil and rotary offer many benefits pen machines don't have, so what exactly has driven this shift?
Minimal Noise and Vibration: One of the most significant drawbacks of traditional coil machines is the intense buzzing noise and vibration they produce, which can be uncomfortable for both artists and clients. These things were originally doorbells. My pal in York had one in his old house, you could hear it 3 floors up. When a few ingenious artists decided to use one as a means of creating a tattoo machine, they quickly learned that with the right frame and spring set-up, these bulky lumps could offer softness and a versitility that made creating a wide range of artwork possible. The thing is, they're unavoidably loud. 'Terrify your customers' loud. They vibrate a lot. They shake themselves loose, wear themselves out and have to be attended to regularly to be kept running well. Battery-powered pen machines operate quietly and generate minimal vibration, providing a more comfortable experience for everyone involved.
Precision and Control: The pen-style design of battery-powered machines allows artists to hold them like a pen, offering unparalleled control and manoeuvrability. This design makes it easier to create intricate designs and execute precise lines, resulting in higher-quality tattoos. There is a solid argument that coils are more suited to lining with larger needle groupings, due to the huge power they have, which can make coil much more suitable to certain genres of art, and a steady hand can create wonderful lines in double the time.
Wireless Freedom: Battery-powered pen tattoo machines are cordless, allowing artists to move freely around their workspace without being tethered to a power outlet. This feature not only enhances convenience but also reduces the risk of irritation and potential cross contamination caused by tangled cords.
Portability: These machines are lightweight and compact, making them easy to transport for on-site work, conventions, or guest spots. Artists can now take their craft anywhere without compromising on the quality of their work.

Benefits of Battery-Powered Pen Tattoo Machines
The rise in popularity of battery-powered pen tattoo machines can be attributed to their numerous benefits, which have set a new standard for the tattoo industry:
Enhanced Artistry: The precision and control offered by these machines empower certain types of artist to take their creativity to new heights, resulting in intricate designs and flawless linework. I have to say - this applies to the machine being used in capable hands. I intend on speaking in another blog about how pens and more 'simple' machines have opened the industry to a brand of artist who was less likely to be part of tattooland using coils.
Client Comfort: The quieter operation and reduced vibration create a more relaxed environment for clients, making the tattoo experience more enjoyable. We've all seen clients panic and sweat when the doorbell kicked off. Rotaries have aided the improved client comfort in the last decade.
Efficiency: Battery-powered machines often offer adjustable settings, allowing artists to customize the speed and needle depth and softness of the needle striking the skin. This adaptability streamlines the tattooing process, reducing the time spent on each design.
Versatility: These machines are compatible with needle cart brands, making them suitable for a wide range of styles and techniques, and meaning only 1 machine is needed for an entire tattoo, rather than 1 machine per needle. Pens can do everything from fine-line work to shading and colouring.
What to Look for When Choosing a Battery-Powered Pen Tattoo Machine
As you embark on your journey to find the perfect battery-powered pen tattoo machine, consider the following factors:
Build Quality: Look for machines made from durable materials that can withstand the demands of daily use. Now, i've learned in the last couple of years, this doesn't mean going only for a 'named brand'... there are some smaller brands from across the world that offer outstanding quality for fractions of what some of the bigger companies ask.
Adjustability: Opt for a machine that offers adjustable speed and needle depth settings to cater to different tattooing styles. This is going to make your tattoo life much easier. Working on different clients skin and across a range of styles requires flexibility in your machine, so going for a model that offers that is likely to offer you better day to day results.
Battery Life: A longer battery life ensures uninterrupted tattooing sessions. Consider machines with removable and rechargeable batteries for added convenience. Lots of machines last 12 hours plus now, but having a machine that has 2nd batteries can be a huge boon, so you don't get stuck.
Compatibility: Ensure the machine is compatible with a variety of needle cartridges, allowing you to experiment with different techniques. It sounds silly, but there are some carts that just disagree with some machines... i've seen many a 7RL or 23CM be fired across the room due to a poor fit between pan and needle.
Ergonomics: Comfort is crucial during long tattoo sessions. Choose a machine that feels comfortable in your hand and offers a good grip. There are so many different shapes on the market, it's genuinely hugely important to make sure the shape suits your hand. You're going to be holding this thing for hundreds, even thousands of hours.
Brand Reputation: Research reputable brands known for their quality and innovation in the tattoo industry. Some top brands are doing great things, so i'd always recommend looking at them. That being said... there are likely brands that aren't as well known in the Western world, but are huge in the East or Southern hemipshere... look at worldwide brand reputation and make a decision that suits you best all-round.
In conclusion, battery-powered pen tattoo machines have taken the tattoo industry by storm, offering unmatched precision, control, and convenience. They've changed the mature of tattooing beyond anything else i've experienced in this last decade.
The transition from traditional coil machines to these advanced tools marks a significant leap forward in the art of tattooing. As you explore your options, keep in mind the benefits and factors to consider, ensuring that the machine you choose aligns perfectly with your artistic vision and style. They're not cheap, so going off look or trust alone can end up having a sting in the tail you don't need. Do a little research, ask around the industry and you'll find something awesome.
